Picking the right brush for your horse

The Brush Store has many brushes to choose from and sometimes it can get a bit confusing as to which brush to use and when
to use it.
As a rough guide line for the grooming process, you would generally start with the stiffest brush and end with the softest brush, starting by removing dried mud, sweat and loose hair. Many of you will have heard me use the expression "big dirt, medium dirt, small dirt, polish". Its the same as cleaning a car....you wouldn't polish the wheels before you had hosed the mud off!!
Based on your horses coat, whether they are sensitive, clipped, fine coated or have a thick, native type coat, along with your preferences, you can choose brushes to meet your needs.

Putting brushes in order

  • STEP 1: Removing dry mud, dried sweat and loose hair. Depending on your preferences you would use a 'Dandy Brush' which is a stiff brush, or a curry comb. These brushes have extra firm or firm bristles
  • STEP 2: Remove stains if applicable. The stain removing brushes have extra firm bristles.
  • STEP 3: Body Brush. These brushes clean through the coat removing dirt, dander, scurf and dust. If your horse is very greasy/scurfy and has a coat which holds onto dirt it may be necessary to use a more coarse body brush first followed by a finer body brush. Body brushes have firm, medium/firm, medium and medium/soft bristles.
  • STEP 4: Gloss Brush. By this point the coat should be clean. Gloss Brushes have soft bristles that do not penetrate the coat. They remove the last traces of dust from the top of the coat so producing a natural shine. Gloss brushes have medium/soft and soft bristles.
  • STEP 5: Polishing Brush. You may like to finish your grooming regime with a polishing brush (sheepskin centre) or a sheepskin mitt.

Flick Brushes

A Flick Brush is a brush that has longer bristles and they are used to 'flick' the dirt out of the coat. The softer flick brushes will remove dust off the top of the coat.
The bristles come in a range of strengths from soft through to extra firm.

Their brushes have varnished wooden backs and all have man made bristles with the exception of one brush which contains natural bristles. These brushes are suitable for vegans.
